Ram Gauri Sangralaya, a museum which houses beautiful, unique and rare collection of items.

About 80 kms from the state capital Gangtok, is Rhenock. Not holding much of prominence in the state, the location does not have much to offer beside a majestic temple of Lord Ganesha which the government recently built. But hidden from the popularity and fame, which it surely deserves is Ram Gauri Sangralaya, a museum which houses beautiful, unique and rare collection of items.

Started in 1970, the museum has a variety of collections ranging from philately, paper currency and coins, antiques, driftwood, artistic stones, old documents and manuscripts and many more. Presently being run by Mr Ganesh Pradhan, aged about 50, he says that this collection has been going on since the time of his father, Ram Pradhan who was a magistrate during the 50s in the kingdom of Sikkim. The then documents have been preserved in the museum.

Mr Ganesh spoke to APN informing that he along with his family, comprising of his wife and two sons, have been running this museum which was officially registered in 2001. Amidst currency, the museum houses coins from the time of Sikkim monarchy, error minted/printed currency of the India, currency from different nations and many more.

Mr Pradhan also mentioned about  collections of old newspapers and magazines like Sunchari which had once been one of the most popular newspapers in its time. Antique pieces like utensils, weaponry also don the walls of the museum, which the family has set up in their own home not having a separate building for the museum.

A 60- year old bonsai is one of the treats to watch which Mr Pradhan says to have been planted by his father.

When asked about any funds from the government, Mr Pradhan refused that no funds from the government have yet been received though he has requested for the government to fund for a permanent museum to be built. Mr Pradhan says that tourists and students frequently visit their home- based museum to look at the collections.

Mr Pradhan has also received a State Award for his efforts in his field and taking his collections, he has represented the state in various exhibitions around the country. Being awarded the gold medal in the state, his son also presented their exhibit in a Philately Exhibition in Arizona, USA.

Stating his aim, Mr Pradhan proudly tells that he wants that the newer generation gets to know about the older culture and tradition. Collection of items has been a tradition since the time of his father and he wants this traditional to continue in the future which his sons are fulfilling dutifully. He also dreams of constructing a permanent museum to house the exhibits which he believes not only will help Rhenock progress but also boost the state tourism in large.

Christmas Festival in Sikkim

Ketan Mangla: 21,Dec, 18 :
The festival of Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world and the preparations for the same in Sikkim are almost done as the stars are seen hanging on the roofs, lights hanging and children singing carols. As the festival nears, the shops have been studded with the items of the festive season. Churches have been decorated and children are practicing for the carol performance and cakes are being brought to the shops.

Since the monarch rule, Sikkim has predominantly been a Buddhist state but the Christian population has grown in the state substantially over the decade as census studies show the Christian population to be 5.3% in 2001, which grew up to 10% in 2011. Despite the festival being a Christian festival, it is celebrated by all the communities of the society with joy and goodwill defining the essence of the festival.

At the heart of the state capital Gangtok, MG Marg, the decorations for the festival have been breath taking coupled with the cold winter nights, which set the mood for the big day. Snowfall in some areas of the state few days ago marked the onset of the festival.

All of the state is ready to celebrate the festival and mark the end of the year on a joyous note.

The SDF party functionaries heading different fronts of the party from all the eight constituencies of west Sikkim were present in the meeting.
The meeting was all about awaring party functionaries' about their roles and responsibilities.
Chief minister Pawan Chamling in his address lamented that opposition parties in the state are trying to politicalise the religions to score their political goals. He maintained that the SDF party is in a mission to save Sikkim from the destructive forces who want to disrupt the communal harmony of state through politically motivated agendas based on caste and religion. Blaming the opposition parties of doing politics on religion, chief minister exorted that party workers should tell people about politics of lies spread by the opposition parties. He called for collective responsibilities on the part of party functionaries to take the party's agendas and vision to the common people. "People get lured to oppositions' politics of intimidation because our party workers do not make them convinced about delusing and negative agendas", Chamling said.

Calling upon the party functionaries to work in tandem to strengthen the party, Pawan Chamling said that state assembly poll is nearing and the party wants active participation and involvement of the party workers from all levels.
