Ketan Mangla: 21,Dec, 18 :
The festival of Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world and the preparations for the same in Sikkim are almost done as the stars are seen hanging on the roofs, lights hanging and children singing carols. As the festival nears, the shops have been studded with the items of the festive season. Churches have been decorated and children are practicing for the carol performance and cakes are being brought to the shops.
Since the monarch rule, Sikkim has predominantly been a Buddhist state but the Christian population has grown in the state substantially over the decade as census studies show the Christian population to be 5.3% in 2001, which grew up to 10% in 2011. Despite the festival being a Christian festival, it is celebrated by all the communities of the society with joy and goodwill defining the essence of the festival.
At the heart of the state capital Gangtok, MG Marg, the decorations for the festival have been breath taking coupled with the cold winter nights, which set the mood for the big day. Snowfall in some areas of the state few days ago marked the onset of the festival.
All of the state is ready to celebrate the festival and mark the end of the year on a joyous note.
