The award function for the Ram Patro Memorial Award successfully concluded today at Hotel Tashi Delek in Gangtok. Following the tradition going on for years, the Sikkim Express and Himali Bela News Houses honored a journalist for Excellence in Journalism in the state which this year was to be the freelance journalist, Mr. Sanjay Agarwal.
Mr. Arjun Piyush was also presented with the award for his immense contribution in the field of Journalism amongst the news houses who was not present at the function due to his father's demise. Mr. Om Adhikari was felicitated in the function as the Non-Journalist staff for the hardwork and dedication in his workfield.
The program was attended by Mr. Ugen T Gyatso, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation as the Chief Guest and Mr. Vinod Sharma, Political Editor, Hindustan Times as the Guest of Honor. Journalists and media personnel from all the media houses around the Sikkim were present in the function which started with the note 'Celebrating Journalism'.
The Ram Patro Memorial Awardee, Mr. Sanjay Agarwal, presented his heartiest thanks to the family and parents without the support of whom the award could not have been possible. He also raised an important issue of 'Eye Donation' in his address to the gathering.
The Minister for Tourism in his address spoke about the strength of media in shaping politics and also highlighted about the ongoing 'tourism season' in the state. He termed the hotel owners to be one of the major stakeholders during this season and appealed them to provide best facilities in terms of appropriate rates and behaviour with the tourists.
Mr. Vinod Sharma, in his address highlighted the deteriorating quality of journalism in the country and the need to exercise the 'freedom of speech' in the right manner. Giving instances from his experience, the veteran journalist proved his point and called the need of the hour to be 'correct dissemination of information'.
