Capacity Building Programme on Research Methodology for Young Faculty in Social Sciences’ organized at Sikkim University

A ‘Capacity Building Programme on Research Methodology for Young Faculty in Social Sciences’ is being conducted by the School of Social Sciences, Sikkim University from 13th to 25th March 2018. The inaugural session of the programme was held at Cauveri Hall of the University on 13th March 2018. Prof. N.K. Paswan, Dean, School of Social Sciences welcomed the Vice- Chancellor Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamang, Registrar Sh. T.K. Kaul, Prof. Sekh Rahim Mondal, Head of Dept. of Anthropology, University of North Bengal, faculty members and the participants from different colleges and Universities.

The capacity building programme is aimed to focus on the inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches of conducting research and also to facilitate the understanding of the basic, quantitative as well as qualitative research methods in social science and allied disciplines. It also aims at developing the capacity for conceptualizing and writing a research proposal and to enhance skills of preparing appropriate research designs. The participants of the programme include thirty eight faculty members and researchers from different colleges and universities of West Bengal, Sikkim, Goa, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi, Telengana, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam.

The inaugural session of the programme was chaired by the Vice- Chancellor Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamang. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Sekh Rahim Mondal, Head of Dept. of Anthropology, University of North Bengal in which he stressed on the importance of the study of Research Methodology. On this occasion a book on ‘Northeast India: Conflict and Development Dynamics’ edited by Prof. Nawal K. Paswan, Dean, School of Social Sciences was released.

In his special address the Registrar Sh. T.K. Kaul appealed to the young researchers to have faith in themselves and encouraged them to participate in the workshop and take full advantage of the opportunity of attending such an elaborately planned programme.

The Vice- Chancellor Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamang mentioned the importance of having good knowledge on the subject and the importance of literature review. Prof. Tamang also emphasized on developing good communication skills for the presentation of a good research paper. He also congratulated the School of Social Sciences on organizing the programme and extended a warm welcome to the participants to the University.
