Gangtok 13th February, 2018 In order to extend technological support to the livestock farmers, ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ranipool under ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong, Sikkim organized a day-long Animal Health Camp cum Farmer’s Scientist Interaction programme on February 13, 2018 at Timpyem village of East Sikkim under the Tribal Sub Plan project. The camp was organized to create awareness amongst the farmers about animal health as well as to provide necessary treatment to their livestock and poultry.
More than 22 farmers from Timpyem village attended and benefitted by the treatment of their livestock. This camp covered treatment of over 30 cattle, 20 goats, 12 pigs and more than 100 poultry birds. The common diseases of livestock recorded during the health camp were ticks infestation, digestive problems, worm infestation, debility, anoestrus and mastitis. Besides the health check-ups and treatment of livestock several essential veterinary medicines including dewormer, mineral mixtures and vitamins, liquid calcium supplements, stomachic powder and wound healing ointments were distributed among the farmers. The farmers were also demonstrated the application of pour-on technology to reduce the parasitic infestation of livestock as well as method of injecting medicines to their livestock through Intra-muscular route.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR- NOFRI, Tadong, Gangtok, who emphasized the importance of the livestock sector for livelihood security of farmers as well as sustainable organic agriculture in Sikkim. He also added that mixed farming combining agriculture and livestock plays an important role in strengthening the overall rural economy of Sikkim. He drew the attention of the farmers to follow the scientific guidelines to rear livestock for optimizing productions.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Principal Scientist (Animal Reproduction & Gynaecology), ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong detailed the aim of the animal health camp organized at Timpyem village. He highlighted the importance of preventive measures to be adopted by the farmers to protect the livestock and poultry from various diseases. He opined that in addition to the hygiene and bio-security measures in livestock farms; vaccination against the important diseases, periodic deworming and feeding of balanced feed with the supplementation of minerals and vitamins are important to maintain the heath and production performance in animals.
Dr. P.K Pathak, SMS (Animal Science) elaborated the existence of major livestock and poultry diseases in the locality, their preventive and control measures. While interacting with the farmers, the issues related to livestock health, common infections, other disease conditions prevailing in the area and constraints faced by them were discussed in detail to the satisfaction of farmers.
Dr. J. K. Singh, SMS (Plant Breeding) and Ms. Bina Tamang, SRF, ICAR-KVK, East Sikkim actively participated during the programme and interacted with the farmers on the different aspects of organic agriculture. The animal health camp received overwhelming response from the farmers and good appreciation from all the villagers.
